| Week 3 of art project |
[Tue, 18th, 06 | 11:32pm ] |
1. How many preliminary drawings have you made in preparation for your project? I've made 2 preliminary drawings, and a couple of rough sketches showing and explaning the ideas I've formulated thus far.
2. What materials have you assembled? I've been working with how I want my suitcases to be positioned. I'm in a bind though because I'm not sure whether or not the venus fly trap idea will work with all of the suitcases I plan on using, considering there are a couple more I'm planning on purchasing. I also bought these praying hands at goodwill today that I played with in my suitcase. I'm considering placing them in the upper part of the suit case, as though they're merging out. I bought a photo of a shelf with some items within the shelf that strongly represent tradition to me, considering tradition is something I view as a strong asset of religion. I'm trying really hard not to make the mentality of being sucked into religion as sacreligious because that's not really my goal, nor do I view myself as that kind of person. I want the mentalities to be subtle, yet loudly interpreted by its viewers.
3. How has your idea changed from last week? Last week, I wanted to create this big throne out of these suitcases. I was all over this idea until I started stacking them, and noticed that the materials were just conflicted with the mental imagery I had in my head, so I ditched that idea and opted for the trap idea, due to the weight of the objects and their ablities to open, close, and lock.
4. How many hours have you spent on the project since your last journal entry? I'm guessing around 8 to 10. Most of my work has consisted of planning though, such as the drawings, research, and arranging my materials to suit their best abilities. I plan on really aiming for solid construction this week.
Photos will be posted very soon, so keep an eye out! :)

| Final Art Sculpture: Week 2 entry |
[Thu, 13th, 06 | 1:21am ] |
1. What have you accomplished since you began your project? I've accomplished finding a direction in which I want to take the project. I first wanted to do a project dealing with a throne because thrones usually stand for hierarchy or social class, and I wanted to build this throne out of suitcases due to suitcases dealing not only with travel, but storage or the preservation of something. I've decided to change my mind though. Instead of using the throne Idea with the suitcases to capture a mentality, I figured it would be really neat to have a set of suitcases on the floor all held up with sticks as traps that all hold their own mentalities such as relationships, vanity, religion, politics, etc. I wanted to lead a trail of bread crumbs to each suitcase, basically referring to the person who will be held captive as an oblivious animal. I figured it would be much more effective (and portable) to do this, for it splits up the mentalities, showing how powerful all of these mentalities are and how they can completely swallow a person in.
2. What have you discovered about the materials you have chosen? The suitcases are interesting because although they are visually aged, they still hold the same purpose as do newer suitcases. They deal with travel, and as I said in question one, preservation. The weight of each suitcase is of good heavyness, so I thought as traps they'd be very effective.
3. Have you looked at any other resources for your project? Label them. There are plenty I have in mind. I bought a Tandy brand control stick for the old computer systems to kind of represent control over a human being. I'm not sure yet as to how I'm going to use it, but I hope to find a creative way to do so. I also found a vintage pin. It's very classic and visually appealing. I thought it would be interesting to use as a representation of vanity.
4. Has anything changed since you began? What is different? The whole concept, as I said previously. As much as I would love to do the throne idea, portability is an issue as well as time for I'm literally piled with final projects and such. I don't view my new direction as an easy way out by any means, but as a way of actually putting more emphasis on the mentalities that people generally fall into and can hardly pull themselves out of.
5. How are you editing the form? I plan on placing the suitcases on a floor in a circular fashion. Breadcrumbs or something simliar starting from a center point and extending outward. I want it to feel as though whoever is starting within this center only has these options to choose from, for society puts people in these situations far too often.
6. Discuss the development of content in the work. Is there anything new? I'm sure there will be eventually. It still feels too early to say.
7. Add anything else of relevance: I might consider using different colors of suitcases to represent moods that often follow these mentalities. There is quite the selection at a few goodwills I've visited, so I'm anxious to see how the colors will correspond with the themes inside of each box. However, this whole thing will not be literal. That's one thing I'm trying to stay away from.
Pictures will be posted of my progress soon.
